What do yellow stakes and red stakes mean in golf?

Both are Water Hazard stakes but there are differences in how you handle the ball next if you lose the ball.

If your ball went off the Red stakes, with 1 stroke penalty, you’ll have 3 options: (1) Decide with your playing partners where is the ball’s first point of entry into ”say” the pond from the red stake. Then measure 2 club lengths from the red stake but not nearer the hole & drop a new ball. (2) In certain circumstances, eg red stakes surrounding a pond, you may be able to drop the ball from the opposite side of the pond (not nearer the hole). You may want to do so because the opposite side has a better angle towards the green. (3) Re-drop/re-tee a new ball from your original ball position.

If your ball went off the yellow stakes, Option 1 above is not available to you. However, there is usually a Drop Zone nearby the yellow stakes for you to drop a new ball (with 1 stroke penalty). Or you can always re-drop/re-tee (1 stroke penalty) from your original ball position.

In the event you found the ball INSIDE the water hazard & you think there’s a reasonable chance of hacking it out, you may do so without penalty but you CANNOT GROUND YOUR CLUB (same as bunker) or else you’ll get penalized.
