Shoes Cleats
Are any road pedal cleats compatible with any road shoes?
I’m switching from mountain biking to road biking and I don’t quite understand road cyclists’ idea of the whole shoes/cleats/pedals interaction.
Say I buy a decent set of pedals, which also come with a set of complementing cleats. Are those cleats compatible with any shoes? I have a pair of Shimano road shoes, and I’m wondering whether the cleat screws are standard?

All road bike shoes currently in production today should have 3 holes as standard, which are compatible with Look, Shimano SPD/SL, Time, Campagnolo Profit and other copy brands. This 3 hole style has become a standard to most pedal manufacturers now, and they only difference comes sometimes in the way the cleat is manufactured. They may also have holes for SPD and SPD-R (Shimano’s earliest incarnations of their own road pedals)
Mountain bike shoes will usually have just 2 holes which are SPD compatible, and that is pretty much every MTB pedal out there, even the other brand and styles of pedals. eg. Eggbeater style, as they all use the same standard of 2 bolts to attach the cleat.
SPD-SL cleats are good for standing in when off your bike, where as look cleats don’t have much in the way of grip and you can damage the cleat easier when walking off the bike. Hope this helps.
