Small Pony
my small pony only knows how to go fast and faster when cantering.i tried circles and half-halts.any new idea?
i ride a small pony who can jump up to 3 feet no problem. he gets in the low 30s and high 20s in dressage tests. but when it comes to cross country, he doesnt listen and only gets faster. i have tried a kimberwick bit, but only worked for the first month or so. any new exercises or ideas would be great.
No to the shank snaffle, no to the tom thumb…no to getting in your horse’s face, yes to getting lighter and lighter, because the lighter that you are, the lighter the response will be from your horse and it feeds on itself, lighter begets lighter. Now, maybe the muscles that allow for comfortable cantering at a controlled speed are not as developed as they need to be. Some horses, especially ones with heart, when tired or hurting, will just try harder and harder, going faster and faster. This is one thing that could be happening. You might try working on developing those muscles …he might be in good shape in some areas but not in all of the areas that he needs to comply with your requests. Now, let’s say that he doesn’t have that conditioning issue, then this is what I would do (someone else might do something different, but this is how I have found to deal with some horses that have this problem, mind you, this doesn’t even work on all horses)…I begin by staying out of their mouths completely, loose rein (not hanging on the ground, but out of their face) and only tapping on one side or the other to direct into smaller circles or figure eights…use the reins as reminders, not brakes…they are only the steering wheel. Do this at a trot…get him listening to those cues to slow down and gather up at a trot…the same cues can then be used at a canter…a combination of both of these suggestions should net you some positive results.
